Critical Thinking In Ghana’s Education Curriculum

Critical thinking can sometimes be a complicated and puzzling process. Critical thinking is necessary in our daily life activities. Dr. Alexa Lamm, 2016 defines critical thinking as, “ A reasoned, purposive, and Introspective approach to solving problems or addressing questions with incomplete evidence and information for which an incontrovertible solution is unlikely”.

Critical thinking is important in every aspect of our lives. It helps us make decisions, solve problems and learn new information. In our classrooms there is the need to infuse critical thinking skills in our students.

Students must first understand the importance of developing these skills. This means teaching students how to analyze data, evaluate arguments and draw conclusions from evidence. Critical thinking involves the mind incorporating prior experience and basic knowledge about a subject matter in order to reach conclusions.  Critical thinking happens when children draw on their existing knowledge and experience, as well as on their problem-solving skills to do things like, Compare and Contrast, Explain why things happen, Evaluate ideas and form opinions, and Understand the perspectives of others.  Critical thinking is a key foundation for language and literacy.

Our classrooms are filled with drills, memorizations, and homework rather than teaching students to think.   In schools, children learn to repeat back what the teacher or textbook says. But children are supposed to be given the chance to  Ask questions, allowed to take decisions, work in groups in other to share ideas, connect to their views, inspire creativity, and also brainstorm. They should not be spoon-fed always.

Getting students to dig deeper and answer questions using higher-level thinking can be a challenge. But in every critical thinking class, students are the generators of questions and interrogators of ideas and answers. The role of the teacher is to stimulate the curiosity of students and to provide answers to their curiosity. Critical thinking skill is necessary in getting children ready to understand how things work in the real world and come up with creative ideas. Children must be taught that critical thinkers must be well-organized and must always have enough information. Critical thinking is important , so it should be taught in schools to create a smart, innovative, and creative generation.
