Alexandra Casamassima Returns to SmartKids Ghana With Passion And Purpose

Alexandra Casamassima, an 11th-grade student at Bishop Fenwick High School, is excited to return to SmartKids Ghana as a Zoom teacher for the April 25th–May 30th teaching session. A dedicated volunteer and former Student Ambassador, Alexandra brings both experience and heartfelt enthusiasm to her role. Having previously taught with the organization, she understands the commitment, flexibility, and compassion required to make each class meaningful and she is ready to embrace the experience once again.

During her first time volunteering, Alexandra quickly realized that teaching virtually across continents comes with unique challenges and powerful rewards. She learned how to thoughtfully prepare engaging lesson plans while also developing the ability to adjust in real time when unexpected obstacles arose. Internet interruptions, language differences, and cultural nuances required patience and adaptability. Rather than viewing these as setbacks, Alexandra saw them as opportunities to grow both as a teacher and as a global citizen.

Through these experiences, she strengthened her public speaking skills, improved her confidence in presenting over Zoom, and became more comfortable thinking on her feet. Most importantly, she learned how to connect with students despite physical distance. Building those relationships became the highlight of her work. She especially loved interacting with the scholars, whose curiosity, enthusiasm, and positivity made every Saturday morning something to look forward to.

Alexandra is also deeply grateful for the mentorship and support she received from the SmartKids Ghana team, especially Esther and Bismark. Their leadership and dedication inspired her to continue giving back and to approach each class with energy and intention. Being part of a team so committed to expanding educational opportunities left a lasting impression on her.

Education is something Alexandra does not take for granted. As a high school junior, she recognizes the privilege of access to quality schooling, resources, and support systems. This awareness motivates her to help create similar opportunities for students who may not have the same advantages. She hopes to spread the blessings she has received by sharing knowledge, encouragement, and inspiration with scholars in Ghana.

Although she serves as the teacher, Alexandra believes the learning is mutual. Each session teaches her new lessons about resilience, cultural awareness, communication, and gratitude. Her time with SmartKids Ghana has shaped her perspective in ways that extend far beyond the virtual classroom.

This spring, Alexandra will once again commit to a six-week Saturday teaching block at 9:00 AM EST, while also completing her fundraising efforts to support the program. She looks forward to reconnecting with the SmartKids Ghana community, creating engaging lessons, and continuing to grow alongside the incredible scholars she teaches.

Through her dedication, adaptability, and genuine passion for service, Alexandra Casamassima exemplifies the leadership and global citizenship that SmartKids Ghana seeks to cultivate.
