At SmartKids Ghana, we are proud to welcome passionate young leaders from across the globe who are eager to inspire and empower scholars in Ghana. One of these dedicated individuals is Hatsune Yano, a rising senior at Belmont High School, whose journey reflects resilience, adaptability, and a genuine heart for service.
Hatsune’s teaching journey began in middle school, when she tutored her Japanese neighbor in English. This early experience taught her the importance of patience and flexibility in education, as well as how to make learning both effective and enjoyable. Over the months she spent tutoring, Hatsune discovered her ability to connect with children and nurture their growth through communication and encouragement.
Her skills deepened further during her time in Japan, especially through the challenges of the COVID-19 lockdown. With schools shifting online, Hatsune became highly comfortable using Zoom and other digital tools. She recalls preparing and delivering a full book review presentation using Google Slides, an experience that not only sharpened her technical abilities but also strengthened her confidence in leading virtual lessons.
For Hatsune, becoming a Zoom Teacher with SmartKids Ghana is about more than volunteering, it’s about creating equal access to education. She strongly believes that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, regardless of their background or resources. Through this role, she hopes to contribute meaningfully to the educational journeys of scholars in Ghana while also continuing to grow as a teacher and mentor.
Hatsune’s global perspective is another strength she brings to the classroom. Having lived on three continents: Australia, Japan, and the United States she has been shaped by multicultural experiences that have made her open-minded and globally aware. She is excited to exchange ideas, share stories, and learn from the culture and perspectives of Ghanaian students.
“I want to support children who may not have the same resources or opportunities as others,” Hatsune shares. “This experience is not only about helping others, but also about challenging and enriching my own perspective.”
We are thrilled to have Hatsune join the SmartKids Ghana community. With her passion, experience, and global outlook, she will no doubt make a lasting impact on the lives of our scholars.
