There is something special about students who do not simply wait for opportunities but actively look for ways to create an impact. Harris Felix, a senior at Milton Academy, is one of those students. With a strong academic background and a genuine interest in learning, Harris has chosen to take his experience beyond the classroom by joining SmartKids Ghana as a Junior Curriculum Contributor. His decision to volunteer is a great example of how young people can use their time, knowledge, and creativity to contribute to something bigger than themselves.

Harris’s academic journey at Milton Academy has given him the opportunity to explore different subjects, ask thoughtful questions, and learn from teachers who encourage curiosity. One of those teachers is Tito Carvalho, who teaches Biology as well as History & Philosophy of Science. And if there is one thing we can safely assume, it is that Harris has had plenty of opportunities to ask the kind of questions that make teachers pause and say, “Okay, let’s think about that.” 

As a Junior Curriculum Contributor, Harris will be supporting the development of educational content for SmartKids Ghana’s scholars. This role goes beyond simply writing lesson materials. It requires creativity, research, teamwork, attention to detail, and the ability to think about how a lesson will actually connect with young learners. And honestly, creating a good lesson is not as easy as it looks.

It is one thing to understand a topic yourself. It is another thing to explain it in a way that makes a scholar say, “Ohhh, now I get it!” That is where curriculum development becomes both challenging and exciting. Harris’s involvement gives him an opportunity to develop practical skills while contributing to SmartKids Ghana’s mission of helping bridge gaps in technology literacy, critical thinking and problem-solving, health literacy, entrepreneurship, and English literacy.

As a high school senior, Harris is also at an exciting stage of his own journey. With graduation approaching, he is preparing to take his next steps beyond high school. But rather than simply focusing on what comes next for him, he has chosen to invest some of his time in helping create opportunities for other young people. That is something worth celebrating.

At SmartKids Ghana, we believe that education should not only prepare young people for their own future, it should also inspire them to help shape the future of others. Harris is already demonstrating that mindset.
