Meet Hossam Hejazi: The Young Leader Who Teaches Because He Cares

She has no prior teaching experience. She’ll be the first to tell you that. But what she does have an unshakeable drive to grow, show up, and make a real difference might just be more powerful than any résume’.

THE HONEST BEGINNING

Most people, when applying for an opportunity, lead with their strengths. Maisa Elsallal did something bolder and she led with honesty. She walked into this process openly acknowledging that she has no prior teaching or tutoring experience, and then, in the very same breath, made one of the most compelling cases for why she belongs here anyway. “My passion for learning and developing new teaching skills drives me to take on this challenge. I’m willing to put in the effort to show up, listen, prepare, and improve”. That kind of self-awareness paired with that level of determination is not something you stumble into. It is built. And Maisa, at just 14 years old and on the cusp of entering high school, has already built it.

WHAT DRIVES HER

Maisa isn’t joining SmartKids Ghana because it looks good on a college application. She’s joining because she sees something real in this work, the chance to contribute meaningfully to another child’s education, while simultaneously growing into a stronger, more capable version of herself. That dual purpose, giving and growing at once, is the heartbeat of great teaching.

A PIVOTAL MOMENT

Maisa stands at one of life’s great thresholds stepping out of middle school and into the halls of Westford Academy. It is a season of transition, of new beginnings, of becoming. And rather than waiting until she “arrives,” she is choosing to step forward now to grow through doing, through serving, and through connecting with young scholars across the world who are on their own journeys of becoming.

WHAT SHE WILL BRING

Experience can be taught. Techniques can be learned. But the willingness to be uncomfortable, to try, to fail, to get back up and prepare better for next time that cannot be manufactured. Maisa carries that willingness in abundance. She will prepare. She will listen. She will adapt. And session by session, she will grow into an educator who makes a lasting impact on every child she teaches. SmartKids Ghana doesn’t just need teachers with credentials. We need teachers with character. And Maisa has character in full.

Welcome, Maisa. You came to us with honesty and that is more than enough. Our scholars are about to meet someone who will grow right alongside them, and we could not be more proud to have you as part of the SmartKids Ghana family. The journey starts now.
