At SmartKids Ghana, we believe that meaningful impact can begin with something as simple as a young person deciding to share what they know with someone else. For Gisele Georges, that decision comes from an experience she has already had in her own school community, working with younger scholars, mentoring them, and helping them understand what it means to be a leader.

Gisele is a 10th-grade scholar at Sharon High School, where she is part of the Class of 2029. Her experience in student leadership has given her an opportunity to work closely with younger scholars and develop skills that she now hopes to use in a different setting: the SmartKids Ghana Zoom Teaching Program.

From Student Leadership To Mentorship

Gisele has already taken on leadership responsibilities at Sharon High School, serving as a Co-Chair and Mentor on the Student Council. In this role, she worked with middle school scholars and helped them understand what it means to serve as a Student Council representative.

For Gisele, this experience was about more than simply holding a leadership position. It gave her the opportunity to work directly with younger scholars, explain ideas to them, answer their questions, and help them become more confident in their own responsibilities. Working with middle schoolers also helped Gisele recognize how much she enjoys supporting children as they learn and grow.

Through this experience, she strengthened two important skills,  leadership and communication. More importantly, she learned how to connect with younger scholars and communicate ideas in a way that they could understand. These are skills that will become especially valuable as she begins her journey as a SmartKids Ghana Zoom Teacher.

Why Gisele Chose SmartKids Ghana

Gisele’s decision to become a Zoom Teacher is closely connected to the work she has already been doing through the Student Council. She shared that her experience working with middle schoolers was one of the main reasons she wanted to teach children in Ghana and become part of the SmartKids Ghana program. Her motivation is simple, she enjoys helping children learn, grow, and become more confident.

Rather than seeing teaching as simply delivering information, Gisele sees it as an opportunity to encourage young people and help them discover their own abilities. She hopes to bring the leadership and communication skills she developed through Student Council into the virtual classroom and use them to create a positive learning experience for scholars in Ghana. Her decision also reflects an important part of the SmartKids Ghana mission, creating opportunities for young people around the world to use their skills to support scholars in Ghana.

Bringing Leadership Into the Virtual Classroom

Teaching through Zoom comes with its own unique opportunities and challenges. Unlike a traditional classroom, virtual teaching requires teachers to find creative ways to keep scholars engaged, encourage participation, and create an environment where they feel comfortable asking questions. Gisele’s experience as a mentor gives her a strong foundation for this.

Her work with middle school scholars has already taught her the importance of patience, clear communication, and understanding the needs of younger learners. As she begins teaching through SmartKids Ghana, she will have the opportunity to further develop these skills while working with scholars from a different educational and cultural environment. Her goal is not simply to teach a lesson and end the session. She wants to help scholars feel comfortable participating, asking questions, and sharing their ideas. That connection is an important part of what makes the SmartKids Ghana Zoom Teaching Program meaningful.

More Than A Teaching Experience

Gisele’s involvement with SmartKids Ghana is also an example of how young people can use their existing experiences to create an impact beyond their immediate communities. Her journey began with the Student Council at Sharon High School. Through that experience, she discovered that she enjoyed working with younger scholars. That interest eventually led her to look for another opportunity where she could use those skills to help children in a different part of the world.

Now, as a SmartKids Ghana Zoom Teacher, she is taking that experience one step further. She is bringing her leadership, communication, and mentoring skills to scholars in Ghana while continuing to learn and grow herself. For Gisele, this is not simply about adding another activity to her high school experience. It is about taking something she genuinely enjoys, helping children learn, and using it to make a difference.

Looking Ahead

As Gisele begins her journey with SmartKids Ghana, we look forward to seeing how her experience develops and the relationships she builds with the scholars she teaches. Her story reminds us that leadership does not always begin with a major title or a large project. Sometimes, it begins with sitting down with a younger scholar, explaining something they do not understand, encouraging them to participate, and helping them believe in themselves. Gisele has already taken those first steps through her work on the Student Council.

Now, she is bringing that same spirit of leadership and mentorship to Ghana. At SmartKids Ghana, we are excited to welcome Gisele Georges to our community of Student Ambassadors and look forward to the knowledge, energy, and perspective she will bring to our Zoom Teaching Program. Her journey is just beginning, but one thing is already clear, when young people choose to use their skills to help others, their impact can reach far beyond the communities they call home.
