Education has the power to change the direction of a person’s life. Sometimes, that impact begins with a lesson in a classroom. Other times, it begins with a screen, a conversation, and someone willing to share what they know. For Gracelyn, an 11th-grade student at Masconomet Regional High School, becoming a SmartKids Ghana Zoom Teacher is an opportunity to use her time, knowledge, and voice to make a meaningful difference in the lives of scholars in Ghana.
Gracelyn joins the SmartKids Ghana 2027 Zoom Teaching Program with previous experience learning and presenting virtually. As a student during the COVID-19 pandemic, she spent long periods learning through Zoom and became familiar with the challenges and opportunities that come with virtual education. Beyond the classroom, she also serves as a Morgan’s Message Ambassador, where she has gained additional experience with Zoom presentations, team meetings, and communicating with others in a virtual environment. That experience gives her an important foundation, but what makes her decision to become a Zoom Teacher especially meaningful is why she wants to teach.
Education As A Way To Make A Difference
For Gracelyn, education is more than simply gaining knowledge. She sees it as one of the most powerful ways to positively influence another person’s life. She is joining SmartKids Ghana because she wants to connect with scholars in Ghana, support their learning, and help create an experience they can genuinely look forward to. Her goal is not simply to teach from behind a screen. She wants to build connections, encourage curiosity, and create a space where scholars feel comfortable learning, participating, and discovering new possibilities. “I want to be someone who can make a positive impact, even from across the world.”
That mindset captures what global education and cultural exchange can truly look like. Distance does not have to prevent connection. A computer screen can become a classroom, a classroom can become a bridge, and a simple willingness to share can create an opportunity for someone thousands of miles away.
Learning Goes Both Ways
One of the most powerful parts of Gracelyn’s motivation is that she does not see herself as someone who is only coming to teach. She is also coming to learn. Through her experience with SmartKids Ghana, she hopes to learn more about Ghanaian culture and community while building relationships with the scholars she will meet. She understands that meaningful educational exchange is not one-sided. Teachers have knowledge to share, but scholars also have experiences, ideas, questions, and perspectives that can teach their teachers something new.
Growing Into Leadership
Gracelyn also sees the program as an opportunity to challenge herself personally. She hopes to become a stronger leader, develop greater confidence, and learn how to communicate and connect with others in a meaningful way. Teaching requires patience, preparation, adaptability, and the confidence to engage a group of learners. It also requires listening and understanding that every scholar learns differently. By stepping into this role, Gracelyn is not only preparing to teach. She is giving herself the opportunity to grow. And that growth is part of the impact. Every time a young person chooses to step outside their comfort zone to serve others, they develop skills that can stay with them long after the program ends.
One Screen. Two Communities. One Shared Purpose.
At SmartKids Ghana, we believe that technology should not only connect people, it should create opportunities. Gracelyn’s journey as a Zoom Teacher is another example of how young ambassadors can use technology to reach beyond their own communities and become part of something larger than themselves. From Masconomet Regional High School to Ghana, her classroom will cross borders. We are excited to welcome Gracelyn to the SmartKids Ghana family and look forward to seeing the connections she builds, the confidence she develops, and the impact she makes throughout the 2027 Zoom Teaching Program.
